Hi,
My son has just bought his first home.
The previous owners were with EDF.
Can he shop around or does he have to stay with EDF?

Thanks

He MUST advise EDF he is the new occupier and initially take a contract with them.

Once that is in place he can then look around for other suppliers.

Your son will be supplied by EDF from the moment he takes possession. He should read the meters as soon as he does, then contact EDF to set up his account. At least for now he should stay on EDF's standard variable tariff.
Once that's done he can shop around but he's unlikely to find a cheaper deal at the moment.

Two things to watch out for 1. EDF will try to sell him a more expensive fixed tariff - he will probably have to insist on staying on the deemed, variable tariff.
    2.  It's very difficult ( if not impossible) to move to another supplier on a variable capped tariff. Few are accepting supply transfers currently, and then they will look to start him on a fixed tariff.
