We've got 140m2 bungalow built in 1986. I's got good insulation in the loft, old double glazed windows (1999 vintage) some sort of cavity insulation of doubtful quality. Our TOTAL annual leccy consumption is around 7000-8000lwh a year of which I guess 50-60% is down to the heatpump for heating and hot water.

Make sure that your hot water is set no higher than 50, perhaps a bit less and try running just once a day for an hour or so. . If you've got the heatpump coming on & off several times a day it will use more energy than just once for an hour or so.

The COP when heating wate is always worse than when heating the house mainly because people have their water hotter (knocking it down just two degrees can save 5% around 5%) and because the weather compensation does not affect hot water production, only heating so dont get hung up on that at this time of the year.

TBH it's not going to be much use tweaking the compensation curve it at this time of the year as you really need it to be cold outside, However I'd crank it down to 45 degrees rather than 50 when you do start tweaking.

Have a read and watch of this which explains how compensation works and how to tweak it - in the end it's just trial and error (it took me my first winter to get it about right)

Today the reading has used 18kw and produced 32kw so deducting yesterdays reading it has used 2kw and produced 5kw so I'm happy with that. I had a look at the compensasion and while I can change it to run in that mode it won't let me alter the settings. When I switched into comp mode the heating arrow came on indicating to me that it was running so I switched back to temperature. My house was biult in the 50's with three extensions along one side adding a sun room, large kitchen and utility. Its an old croft house that for some reason a previous owner like to extend. The upstairs is fully insulated through the room in the roof scheme, which was a disaster in itself. They were supposed to insulate the ceilings to but said the wern't trained for it. On the up side, they left the materials for my husband to do it and had enough to insulated the downstairs back wall (handy being married to a joiner) The main house is solid stone but the extensions and the extra added to the front is block.  Cavity wall insulation was added in 2019. We've also been slowly replacing windows but the husband retired and with my disability repalcement is at a hault so i'll have to put up with the leaky whistling windows until I win the lottery. When the fella's came to install the heating they told me the livingroom and bathroom had to 21 degrees then stuck the wireless thermostat on the hall wall. There is radiators in every room but the sunroom and utility. The house is south facing so that helps but the downside is we are exposed so when the wind hits it feels colder in the house. I'm thinking if I keep the temperature at 18 so that should make a different but i'm just not sure if its running efficiantly.

Pressing the button to set the heating mode and Holding the button to get the Service menu results in an identical display, Try to hold it for 3 seconds. You will only know you got into the Service menu when you go to edit it.

My water today was used 3kw produced 4kw. I'll leave it at that for now but may change it in the future as having it on for 3 hours a day for dishes and hands might be a bit much.

Markin.. Thank so mush for the video. I have seen one like it before but it didn't show how to change the compensation or maybe I missed it. Tried it tonight and it came up. Will do a bit more reading up before I try setting it. Pity the manuals print is so small I can't read it.

You can change the curve by moving it up or down with the middle two buttons on the front screen. If you change the +0 to, e.g. -5, it will lower the whole curve by 5 degrees.  I do this on mine.

Is your wireless thermostat a Mitsubishi one or another make? That's very important to know for the right advice.

I've been playing with my hot water timings. Not changed our usage but have left it on for two hours, six hours and 12 hours.in a 24 hour period

On for two hours it actually heats for around 45 minutes and use between 1.6-1.8kwh and we've got plenty of hot water. However I I leave it on for six hours it will try reheating the water for another fifteen minutes or so which adds another 400watts to the leccy consumption,. Having it on for 12 hours it reheats again and adds another 400 watts. Therefore leaving it on for 12 hours adds around 800 watts for no real benefit except that the water is a little warmer later in the day .

I haven't left it on for 24 hours, but I'm guessing that it will try to reheat every six hours or so.  hHwever because the water in the tank is a couple of degrees warmer in the morning it uses slightly less energy for the initial heating period.

My conclusion being that it probably costs an extra 1-.5kwh a day if I leave it on compared with just having it active for an hour, using an extra 1kwh or more a day at 29p = over £100 a year for no real benefit.(to me anyway)

    Nice test @matelodave

Similar to ourselves we just need 30 mins at an average of 1kWh a day and hot water temp reduced to 45oC in the last week. We left it on for 24 hours on Wednesday and used 2.7kWh for the day set to 45oC
