How do I set Ecodan Heating
Comments
-
What about the hot water? So for an example our Ecodan is set on the scheduler to heat up once a day for 45 mins and that does 2 showers one being long if needed for hairwash and leaves enough for washing hands and stuff that can't go in the dishwasher and uses 1.5 kWh of power so 44p a day at the current cap rate for us.
Personally we have the heating schedule all blanked out this time of year, no heating but if you have a very drafty house and it leaks warmth then the option you have chosen may be best for you. Definitely get the system on the compensation curve as soon as possible 👍
Your January usage was very high but it was the coldest month. Best you get these new settings in and you can review next Jan.1 -

If wireless, can you move it to a different room?Scoobnut said:I did get the power usage from Jan, so far it has used 2866kwh and produced 5375kwh. Not sure if that's good or not.
That's not great, the ratio between the two numbers (Coefficient of Performance, CoP) is only 1.87. It should be closer to 3.There's definitely room for improvement!N. Hampshire, he/him. So you should aspire to using about 1790 kWh of electricity to produce 5375 kWh of heat. If you could have done that you would have saved over 1000 kWh of electricity. I don't have the equipment to measure how much heat my heat pump produces but I know by comparison with my old oil boiler that it must achieve a CoP of around 3.QrizB said:Scoobnut said:I did get the power usage from Jan, so far it has used 2866kwh and produced 5375kwh. I think the OP means their usage from January to the present date, @MsttyMstty said:Your January usage was very high .....Reed1 -
Hope so @Reed_Richards 👍

COP is measured in a controlled environment at specific input and output temperatures and probably doesn't include all the ancillary stuff like pumps etc which are part of the heating system.
It's highly unlikely that anyone will get anywhere near the quoted COP's, especially in the winter when the outside temperatures are low and most people crank up their heating to compensate, much like most people dont achieve the quoted MPG's for their cars.
The way to improve COP is to ensure that you don't heat your hot water above 50-55 degrees (less is better) - most heatpumps will activate an immersion heater (with a COP of 1) if you try to get it any higher. Likewise the higher the flow temperature and the lower the outside temperature then the worse the COP will be.
Again some systems have a back-up or boost heater (with a COP of 1) which can kick in if the outside temperature drops below a set threshold or if you set the flow temp above 50-55 degrees. I dont know about Ecodan, but my Daikin has a 6kw back-up heater which was originalyl set to activate when the outside temp dropped below -3. I've got mine shut off completely but, if you've got one, it's probably worthwhile checking and perhaps adjusting the threshold temperature to avoid it operating.
The way to improve your COP is to reduce both the hot water tank temp and heating flow temp to the lowest you can get away with and to ensure that the weather compensation slope is adjusted to balance the heat loss.
Obviously the COP should better in the spring and summer months but again it's dependent on the outside temp and the temp setting of the water in the tank.
Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers1 -
That's a lot of cop🤣🤣1

So after a lot of reading I tried setting the weather compensation which did switch on in the heating setting but I canot change the parameters. I also switched the water to eco setting (in pic) not sure if that was the right thing to do but it did make sense to me.

Thank you for the videos. Unfortunatly I had seen them already and didn't really help with my problem. Right now my system is a mess and running heating when it shouldn't . I found a home owners manual which I followed the recomendations but setting the weather compensaions wouldn't let me change them. My hasband is going nuts about the system and cost so dosn't want it running so Iam going back to the orgional settings and just keep the thermostat in the living room. I will admit this heating was my idea as the solid full boiler was greedy but I am now regretting it.

Perhaps we should go back to the beginning.
What do you want to achieve from your Ecodan system
1) do you want baseline heating on all year round or would you turn the central heating off from now til September
2) have you adjusted your hot water heating yet as in max temperature and how long it is on for each day.
As an example our hot water is on for 45 mins everyday before 5am and costs 1.5kWh a day. It provides showers and hot water for dishes and handwashing. What do you need from your hotwater system?
Our central heating is off. Admittedly yesterday and today are a bit on the fully side but since 11th April that has been a rarity.
If you really want to save money you need to get into the settings, schedules for hot water and heating and then get to know the compensation heat curve settings for September onwards.1
