Is my energy usage high?

I have been thinking about my energy usage and had considered us to be relatively low users but thought it might be best to do a sanity check.

3 bed semi, 2 adults 3 teenagers. Oil CH average electric use 3380kwh per year.
We typically have 2 laptops on in the day Mon-Fri. Children only play computer games at weekends and the holidays. Smart TV is used evenings and weekends - it's only x-box or TV not both at the same time but my have a PC running at the same time.

Hot water comes from the boiler. We don't have a dishwasher, tumble dryer or microwave. I mainly cook from scratch so do use the cooker a fair bit.
Bulbs are energy savers but not LED's yet.
September PC usage will drop as my eldest goes to uni

Does my energy use seem high?

3380kWh is pretty good for 5 people.

Our estimated usage is 10,000 per year although it will go down as we've just got solar panels.

No that's not high for 5 people, you can probably trim here and there turning things off completely not leave them on standby but it sounds like you are doing things well.

If your oven is on everyday and electric a cheap microwave would be a good investment especially if you can bulk cool then reheat. That's where we have seen another good saving off our electric.

Your electricity usage doesn't seem unreasonable or 5 of you. Like pretty much everyone I'm sure there is scope to reduce this if you really want to though.

Heating and hot water is the largest contributor to most people's energy usage though so without any information on your oil usage it's not really possible for anyone to comment on energy use overall. Not that I know anything about oil heating myself to be able to comment if you did.
  • Thanks all, nice to know we aren't using excessive amounts. The computer/gaming use seems the most indulgent,  but I feel we limit the children's computer time a fair bit already so won't push to reduce that further.
I'll look at what other small changes we can make.

Oil use I'm pretty content with, hot water is on 20 minutes a day unless someone runs a bath then it doubles.
When the heating is on we tend to have it low and not all day. I much prefer to be under a blanket than use too much heating.

I think on average we use around 1000ltrs a year, obviously it's more expensive now - around double what we often pay, but we've also benefited from it being 20ppl so swings and roundabouts
