I rang LifeSearch today for a life insurance and income protection quote. The chap was really helpful and provided a quote with LV=.

When reviewing they key facts I can see that they have provided a combined life and critical illness policy, plus income protection.

Is this usual for insurers to push the combined life and illness product? Can I get a life insurance cover without critical illness?

If I understand this correctly, this would pay out for illness or death. However, if it's terminal and over 12 months they won't pay.

Confused!

Are you referring to the key facts document or the key facts illustration?   The former is generic and covers all options available on the plan. The latter is personalised and covers only the options selected.  With a quote, you should get both documents.

Lifesearch is not an insurer.  They are an intermediary.  intermediaries will give you what you ask for.  Although adviser intermediaries will usually give you advice on what you should have.

Can I get a life insurance cover without critical illness?
    yes.

I think in this case it would be the key facts summary of the combined product (it states for online applications).

I'll speak to them on Monday, as I don't really want a combined product.

I have also have some quotes coming through Cavendish to compare. So will see what they come back with.

Thanks for your feedback, much appreciated.

Most of the products available today are combined products.   However, you pick and choose the bits you want.  So, life assurance only isn't a problem.

A menu plan will usually provide the following options;-

life cover - pays a lump sum or regular amount on death
    which includes
terminal illness benefit - pays a lump sum on diagnosis of a terminal illness, possibly with death expected in a set time
    with optional
critical illness cover - pays a lump sum on diagnosis of one of a list of illnesses often to a certain severity
    with optional
income protection cover - pays a regular tax-free income after a set waiting period in the event of inability to work due to accident or illness.

You can usually select any combination of the above.
