Benefits

I am a pensioner on Housing benefit. Does anyone know if HB claimants will get the £650  announced yesterday? There is no clear info from any of the sources I have tried.

No but do you get state pension, pension credits, pip ir attendance allowance?

Thank you Marcia for your response.

I get state pension and am aware I will get an extra £300 winter fuel allowance., but was unsure about the £650.

The government statement says "other means tested benefit" which Housing Benefit is, so I assumed I, and many others, would qualify.

All the details are here https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/cost-of-living-support/cost-of-living-support-factsheet-26-may-2022

Unfortunately HB is often not included in the list of qualifying benefits for various schemes for help - the rules for it seem to be much more generous for pensioners than for working-age claimants, but I don't know what rationale there is not to include working-age HB at least.

Possibly because to include Hb would require the involvement of local authorities rather than DWP (?). Does seem unfortunate that some people on Hb may not get the payment whereas someone getting help with rent through UC will.
Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.

Some people claiming HB could also still be claiming Tax Credits, so they will qualify through this. Though of course some will lose out if it's just HB they are claiming.

I'm on contribution based ESA but get council tax benefit which surely proves low income. I still don't qualify for the £650 extra payment which would help a lot. I presume this is correct?

That's correct. Contributions based ESA doesn't qualify you for the £650. Please see the factsheet linked above.

Have you checked to see whether you are eligible for Universal Credit?
