I have a 10 tog double duvet that I would like to wash (have brought out our lighter tog summer duvet). I have been quoted £20 by the dry cleaners.
Would I be able to get away with washing it at home? With one income and 3 young children I try to be as careful with money as possible but I also don't want to pack it away as is. Its rather stained from an incredibly refluxy baby. I have an 8kg washing machine. Or could I possibly bath wash it? I have plenty of line drying space and a tumble dryer if necessary.
Any tips would be appreciated. I do appreciate you could probably buy a new one for less than the dry cleaner cost but that is never my mindset. I will use something until its on its last legs rather than buy new.

I think a ten tog is a bit too big for your washing machine but you can take it to a laundrette and d it yourself for about three ish quid and take it home a nd dry it on a line..

For future reference, with 3 children it might be worth investing in a ‘Duvet Cover Protector’ cost about £10 on Amazon for Double Bed Size0 -
What type of duvet is it, how old and can you remember how much it was when you bought it?It might sound frivolous for an MSE board but if it's fairly cheap and not the goose down variety that can cost hundreds, it might be worth giving it to the dogs/cats home and buying a new one.Thrifty Till 50 Then Spend Till the End

I washed mine (King size, synthetic fibre 10.5 tog) in my large-load domestic machine this week. It had stains from the cat that had penetrated through the cover. I treated them first with a laundry bleach and then washed it at 30 degrees. 20 minutes in my tumble dryer and then draped over the ceiling-mounted laundry rails for 2 days. I always took mine that were too big for my machine, to a laundrette and put in one of their big machines to wash. Check the weather report and go early enough in the day to be able to line dry it, though be aware a wet duvet will be heavy in case you have to lug it back yourself. I could always park my car outside to fetch it back. Otherwise I'd also use their dryers.0

I used to take my double duvet to the launderette but now I have an 8K washing machine, and a kingsize duvet. I wash it at home. There isn't a huge amount of room for movement and I have always thought if necessary I would turn it around and do a second wash if stains remained but it's always come out lovely first time , coffee stains all gone ! Just wait for a nice hot day and get it out on the line early.Decluttering, 20 mins / day Jan 2024 2/20
