And you can download your DNA from Ancestry as a zipfile and upload it into other databases to extend your search. They may offer free uploads occasionally, or you can pay a reasonable one-off fee. Some people are on multiple sites, but you can find additional matches who aren't on Ancestry.
This seems to be the technique that BBC Two - DNA Family Secrets uses. Which databases do you know of (apart from https://gedmatch.com and https://myheritage.co.uk/) ?
I'm looking for a half-sister, having successfully found a missing cousin. The latter was via a DNA test that my daughter did on https://www.23andme.com/en-gb. (Flushed with that success, my daughter uploaded her DNA test data to Gedmatch.com and I uploaded mine (done through Ancestry). It spotted the connection instantly, as you'd hope)

Hi
Both FamilyTreeDNA and Living DNA will accept free uploads but have smaller databases. The former allows you to identify chromosome segments, the latter doesn't. Note FamilyTreeDNA publish your email address to other users.
I didn't find gedmatch much help (the contacts were all in Ancestry or myheritage anyway) although I'd like to get back in (problems with the linked email).
I have been playing with DNAPainter as well. That plots the results of your DNA matches using segments identified by the chromosome browser in myheritage or gedmatch, or FamilyTreeDNA . The basic account allows one tree and chromosome map for free.
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -
I have been doing family history for a number of years an then I had my dad's DNA analysed. I was very impressed as it linked my to alot of relatives that I had already traced through the old fashioned paper trail. Therefore, I do think they are worth it - wait for an offer though - always MS!!!!:rotfl:0
