University student and energy costs
Hello, my son is in his second year of a 7 year course. He shared a house with 4 others for his first year. They used Unihomes to pay the rent and bills. Unihomes were supposed to never increase what was agreed, but with all of these companies they had something in their terms and conditions where they did. This time they have a house but were looking to do the household bill themselves. Can anyone point me in the right direction where I can learn more about the plans for students on a fixed amount. We have been waiting for the uni to get back in touch but they seem to be dithering on this subject.
Many thanks

There will be no special terms for students
When they take responsibility for the house one of them must ring the existing suppliers, give them meter reads - he/she will go on the standard tariff, resist any pressure to go on a fixed tariff.
Read those meters weekly, do the sums and settle up weekly; give the readings to the supplier at least monthly. Read and understand those bills when they comeNever pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0 -
There is no difference in rates if you are a student , working, on benefits or a pensioner. First thing is anyway that they will need to stick with the existing supplier for 21 days when they move in. Thereafter they are free to shop around.
Problem would only be if the house is listed as a business, which might be the case if energy was handled by Unihomes before as this would be very expensive. You should check this now and if it is listed as a business see that it is changed.

And check the house of multiple occupancy is not on a business tariff and if it is find out how much that is before committing.0
