Virgin Airways Flight Voucher Refund Help

In September 2020 we were due to fly America via Air Lingus and then to fly back from America using Virgin Airways. Obviously, because the world shut down we were not able to fly. So we contacted the airlines to cancel the flights, Virgin offered us a flight voucher (I do not remember them offering us a refund) which we decided to accept as we fully intended to do the holiday once things got back to normal.

We have been trying to rebook our flights using the Virgin Voucher. However, the prices for Virgin flights is extortionate at the moment. We found a return trip for the two of us that would have cost £1300 which with the voucher would have meant we would have paid an extra £500 which was fine. When we contacted Virgin to try and book the flight they told us because the flight we booked with them originally was from America back to the UK they can only use the American prices for the flights as the voucher is in USD and cannot be exchanged to GBP. This meant that on top of the voucher they are asking we pay an additional £1,500. Naturally we cannot afford this at all and it seems ridiculous that we cant use it to pay the UK price which is far cheaper. We have asked for a refund but they said that the terms and conditions mean we cannot have one.

Is there anything we can do to get our money back? Or do I have to chalk it up to experience and accept that we have lost it?

  • Can you book the outbound leg as a UK booking and the return flight separately as a US one with the voucher?  Splitting a return trip into two single flight bookings isn't usually ideal but it sounds like that's what you'd done in 2020.

Have you checked the Ts & Cs of the voucher to validate what you've been told?  No particular reason to doubt that a voucher will be unrefundable though, that's very much the norm, so if Virgin haven't breached the contract in any way it sounds like you don't have any avenues to pursue other than to use it, despite the price increases, which again are very much the norm.
  • Yeah I have double checked the T&C’s and to be honest just resigned to the fact that we have lost it. We did look at booking it one way but the prices were stupidly high even then.
