Cruise Alterations

Hi,

After a few years of not travelling, my family have booked to go a cruise, but with a few days to go the provider has removed one of the main highlights of the trip, replacing it with longer in another earlier destination.

You can still visit the removed location by boat ride, but only if you pay £60 extra per person.

This feels a bit like going to a pub, paying for a cheeseburger only to be told the cheeseburger is off, you can still have the chips, but you can pay extra for a standard burger!

Where do my family stand with regard to consumer rights on this?

Thanks in advance

Does it mention anything about changes to itinerary in the terms?

Sometimes covered by travel insurance. Sometimes the cruise company give onboard credit. Read your terms and conditions. Ask Emma Cruises on YouTube, she is very knowledgeable

It has been over 8 years since we cruised but even back then the T&C claimed that the company reserved the right to alter itineraries for many reasons. It happens! Can you be more precise about which line and which port/destination has been changed?

    P&O Cruises. Geiranger.

It seems that the port knows Iona is off docking there all season...but its still advertised on their website itinerary!

See term 40 Booking Terms and Conditions | P&O Cruises (pocruises.com)

P&O probably class this as not a significant alternation.

Quite probably the view P&O would have.  If this location was the main reason a customer was selecting a cruise they would have needed to make that clear at the time of booking, and have confirmation from the cruise operator that they could have a full refund if it was removed from the schedule prior to departure.  In reality that is highly unlikely to be given, and cruise destinations are liable to change for many reasons including, but not only, weather issues.

Most likely, just seems very cheeky to ask for payment to get a boat to go somewhere we've already paid to sail to!

I think they forget that some use the cruise as a means of transport more akin to a sleeper train than as a destination!

Might be down to P&O not being willing to pay for, or not being able to use the sea walk at Gerainger.  Without the seawalk servicing a huge ship like Iona using tenders isn't that practical.
