Ask HMRC for a copy of the deed.

The normal process is that after you complete the online form they send out  form to be signed. Is your son sure he did not get one to sign.?
Thanks.  Yes, he is convinced that he didn't sign anything and although he can be somewhat scatter-brained, others online are all insisting that they didn't sign one either.

Thanks all for the responses & info which is greatly appreciated.

Many victims have been persistently pestering HMRC, and they're now investigating their ties with this company.  Fingers crossed.

They're also planning to bring it to Martin's attention in the hope that he can provide good advice on this.  Is anyone aware of him having already published an article of relevance?

Any tips or advice, should we decide to engage the services of a solicitor in order to remove the deed of assignment, and to break all ties with this company?  Presumably it would need to be a specialist tax solicitor.  I guess this would be very expensive so hopefully it won't come to that.

Have you established which tax years the deed covers?

As I understand it it cannot be future tax years.

Not as yet although from what others have said, it seems to typically cover just the current tax year.  Not sure I understand how, but apparently they have a method of extending it, especially if HMRC will just accept any deed at face value and then tell you that it is your problem to resolve if you feel it was presented fraudulently.

I think Martin's advice would  be not to use a third party to claim tax relief. Claim direct yourself.

If you must use a third party make sure you read everything carefully and understand what you are signing,

No, the victims of this.  It is on the Facebook group for people who fell foul of this, and I believe that many have spoken to a rep from MSE, in particular those who now have a copy of the deed and claim it is not their signature.

This is exactly what just happened to me!  My tax refund of £607 was sent to 'Tax Credits Ltd' who I haven't ever heard of.  HMRC would not accept any responsibility, even though now I have found that they are aware of this company and have received many complaints.  Why are they still sending the taxpayers money to them?
