Refund onto archived card

Options
Bit of a long story I'm afraid. Back towards the end of 2019 we bought Queen tickets for June 2020 on a credit card that then came to the end of its 0% interest free and so we closed it and opened a new one. Another card later we are now unable to go to the rescheduled gig.

Spoke to Ticketmaster who were happy to cancel and refund, but only to the old card. Have spoken to Tesco bank twice who say they can't find the old card and so it likely must be archived on their system and to ask Ticketmaster to refund to another card. I suspect they won't do that, but where do I stand? Our money is presumably floating in Tesco Bank's system somewhere.

Hi, did Ticketmaster explain why they were so inflexible that they would only refund to a card that had been closed?

If the card was closed then wouldn't the refund have bounced straight back to Ticketmaster? Tesco obviously think so, which is why they have asked you to contact Ticketmaster and ask them to refund to another card, which they should have done in the first place.

I don't think your money is floating in Tesco Bank's system. I think the card is archived as they said and in that case, no refund would be applied to it.

If I were in your shoes I'd definitely contact Ticketmaster again and ask them to please be sensible and refund the money to a card that can accept it. You've spoken to Tesco twice, why not Ticketmaster?

Hi, yes they said they'd been advised by their bank that for fraud purposes they could only refund it to the payment card.

When I spoke to Tesco the second time they did say that was correct. I think the issue is the time elapsed means the card is now archived rather than semi active. Apparently when a card is cancelled it only goes semi cancelled in case of things like this.

Have contacted Ticketmaster again, but not holding out much hope of them changing anything.

i'm going off memory of working in financial services here so forgive me if the name of this account type is wrong, but I have known refunds to closed accounts go into a suspense account i think the name is - this account is owned by the card provider in this case Tesco. for unallocated payments

Tesco will be able to track the refund sent by ticketmaster

No. It should go to a internal account linked to the old card.

Ticketmaster are right to not refund to anything other then card used for payment.

Thanks everyone, we've spoken to Tesco and they have gone away to do some digging and will call us back.

Got another update. Spoke to Tesco 3 times today and they are adamant the money would have bounced straight back to Ticketmaster so got to try and take it up with them, which is easier said than done when you can't speak to them
  • I’m in a similar position. Ticketmaster we’re adamant the refund has been paid. Then after much digging about they confirmed it had bounced back to them in Feb. They sent me a form in May which I completed and from then apparently it takes 28 business days to get the money back. However it is now longer than that, I still have no refund and it is 6 months since the event was cancelled. Customer service is shocking when you can only contact them via a link on their website. Did you ever get this resolved them?
