C'mon, that's half the fun. Let's all guess the type of handle, the construction of the door, the extent of damage...

Ha!  Photo won't do justice as the plate is currently glued in place so you wouldn't be able to see the damage.

But the handles look like these.

4 Sets of Victorian Scroll Lever Latch Door Handle Polished Chrome Finish 120mm Backplate- Golden Grace : Amazon.co.uk: DIY & Tools

And the door is a frame with a single panel but I womder if the door frame is portion is actually hollow - at least it sounds so if you thump on it.

Ideal - the screws are at each corner, and well away from the latch mechanism. I think BUFF's solution should work - pretty much ideal, I'd have thought: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Handle-Fixing-Screws-Escutcheons-4Pieces/dp/B07Q2N8QRL/ref=asc_df_B07Q2N8QRL

    Hi,

OH had already slapped it back on with just glue holding the handle panel in place.  It's bound to come off again but this time I'll be ready.

If it’s holding now, now is the time to get the fixings and do the job.
use a small pilot drill first, then step up to maybe 3.5mm, whatever the fixings are dia.
A thankyou is payment enough .

You'll need to tell him that quite soon when the glued handle comes off again!
