How did the AA know my new bank card details?

I got an e-mail from the AA saying that my renewal was due and they would take the fee from my bank card which is registered with them. I realised that I needed to change it as I was sent a new card last month which not only has a new number, it has also changed from a Visa to a Mastercard.
I logged on to my AA account and found that they already had all the new details for the card. How?
I know I certainly have not changed it, in fact it took me ages to track down the password to log in. I have only changed the card details on Paypal and my Amazon account. The AA said they would take the payment at the start of July so they should not have tried to access it yet.
Any ideas? I find it all a bit spooky.

I believe the bank automatically update it to companies you have it registered with for payment3

Under a CPA the merchant is supposed to run the card updater service before attempting payment... they effectively ask your bank if your card number is the same still and there is one of three responses given:
1) Yes, go ahead
2) No, here is the new number
3) No, and here is a reason code (eg account closed, CPA cancelled etc)
Now they dont go direct to your bank obv but via middle and I thought the service was limited to in network changes so wouldn't work if the card changed network but maybe it does now.1 -
Thanks for your replies. I will not bother to change the details in the future in that case.0

One of the reasons why "losing your card" does not stop regular payments as many seem to think.

Retailer applies to card provider for updated card details. bank has no part in this 👍Life in the slow lane0 -

Retailers pay extra for account updater side of the system & they request details from visa/mastercard.
So the likes of Netflix request this each week.
Card no's are updated to vias/mastercard on any changes via systems. But banks do not pass this on to retailers. This is visa/mastercard responsibility.
To cancel a CPA via Visa. You access their system. Select the retailer from the list of customer spending & select cancel.
I was not aware that it was shared between Visa/Mastercard as separate systems supplied by each co. So not quite sure if they have a background agreement on this. As banks do not hold a list (unlike DD's) of CPA's.Life in the slow lane1
