Leaving the UK with only an ID Card

Hi guys!

I wonder if anyone has any definitive insight to this one for me?
My elderly mother-in-law is looking to travel back to her home country soon, in Europe. Currently, her passport has expired, but she still has her national identity card, and I am trying to find out if she would have any issues at the airport when boarding the plane to LEAVE the UK. Her destination country has no issues with receiving entry using an ID card.

Just wondered if anyone had any info on this as I have tried to contact the airport she would be flying from, the airline and the Home Office and cannot get any responses at the moment!

Thanks
David

Without knowing the country you are going to its next to impossible for someone to say... ultimately the airline must be comfortable that you have the right to enter the destination country.

Which country? If it's a Schengen Member State the advance passenger information (API) which includes travel document details will need to be submitted when checking-in. You need to check with the airline whether the identity card is acceptable before booking.

Assuming your MIL's passport and ID card are UK-issued, there's info in the following link which may be helpful.

I'm not sure why the airline can't say, seems to be a simple enough question . . .

    It hasn't since 2011 (I think).

There should be no reason to deny an EU citizen boarding to an EU country (plus Georgia and probably a few others) on an EU ID card, however unless (pre-)settled status has been obtained, there may be issues on the return to the UK.

As long as the destination country accepts it then you should be fine travelling out. The airline would be the people you need to confirm with though.
