British Gas Smart Reader

We have been tracking our energy bills via our smart reader, making big changes to what we use to reduce our costs since our tariff ended.
However, when logging onto the website today, our smart reader reading was incorrect.  For example, on May 19th, it read £9.32 but the website confirmed we spend £15.52 on 57K energy.
Contacting BG, they advised this was a known issue for many customers since the tariff change and is being worked on.
It was a shock for us, to find out we had been spending way more than thought and budgeted for, but some customers will not find out until they get the bill if not logging on to check.
We will raise a complaint, as thought our changes had really helped reduce bills but known issue with BG has set us back and now out of synch on our spending and budget.

You're not alone, there have been a few threads where people have found that the prices displayed by their smart readers ("in-home devices" or IHDs) haven't been updated with the changed tariffs.
The IHD readings of kWh used will remain accurate and you can use these instead while you are waiting for the tariffs to be updated.

  • Suppliers have to update tariffs by sending new tariff data to each of the meters. To interface with the DCC Network suppliers use a package of GCHQ-level secure software known as an Adapter. It may be this link that is the issue.
