The simple and short answer is you don't build trust in a few short minutes, you build a relationship over a period of time .You see someone early on , preferably when they have no problems and build a rapport with them .Unfortunately sometimes people who have anxieties or phobias etc leave treatment until the last moment and it is hard on all concerned when the first time you see someone you have to do treatment.The basic technique is desensitisation ie you come often enough and see the same person so that there are no unknowns and you can be introduced slowly to treatment. And then you keep on coming in regularly .There are medications and drugs you can use to calm people , but in general you find given time and patience almost anyone , except some with severe problems, can be treated in a normal dental practice without sedation.1

Agree 100% with Brook. There is no 'fool-proof' technique. Regular dental attendance has to be part of their life in order to make it a 'normal' thing that's done.
Only a small part of it is about the child with the difficulties, though. If attendance is frequent, and started really early in life (Even before teeth have come through) then hints, tips and advice given to/for parents and carers about particularly diet and also brushing can mean that a child will grow up perfectly happy to visit the dentist - as nothing more that 'counting teeth' is ever necessary.
The worst thing possible is for a 6 yr old to be dragged into a dentist for the first time in pain. Particularly if the child has learning difficulties. That will be a traumatic experience for everyone involved.How to find a dentist.
1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.2 -
i am very grateful for @Toothsmith @brook2jack2 time on the forums as currently dentists are hard to come by and recently always seeing someone new as local dentists seem overwhelmed and its so nice to get second opinion when you have a new to you dentist.21k savings no debt0

My hygienist recommended implant floss but I couldn't reach far enough back to use it, she found it difficult from her better position and I found it impossible. Even with my trusty electric toothbrush I seemed to miss the inside gum edge, little bottle brushes also didn't reach and the water flosser was great for everywhere else.So far I'm delighted with this gadget, didn't know it existed, and hope that my dentist will be happy with the results.Many thanks - again!
