to get cheap insurance you need the cheap group car insurance and good on fuel get like a fiesta or kia picanto similar likes of them are about 2

autotrader you can select insurance group you want low as possible

but always make sure theres history of service and the trader/dealer always check the reviews
Not necessarily true, many of the low insurance group cars are actually higher in insurance for young drivers than some higher grouped cars. This is because they are popular with new drivers and therefore more likely to be in accidents which pushes their rate up despite the group.

Fiat 500 was the cheapest car to insure for a new driver here also, but every car I viewed looked like it had been used
in a demolition derby.  Newer shape Ford KA which is essentially the same car was in far better condition and 3 years
newer and slightly cheaper also. WIN WIN WIN.... Insurance was pennies more but a far better choice and with the
current car prices its now worth just £500 less than they paid 5 years ago...

Fiat 500 seems very popular with new young drivers. They have their niggles but are pretty robust and cheap to fix.

There have been some great suggestions, one of which we did ourselves and got our young 'un a Fiat Panda when they just past their test.

Another couple of suggestions are the Ford Fiesta and Vauxhall Corsa.
Like all cars they have their faults, but these cars were made for this market and as long as you ignore the sporty hot hatch models, they are very insurance friendly, cheap to run, service and repair.

Steer clear of any engines with a turbo, so a 1.2 Corsa or a 1.25 Fiesta would be my choice.
Skip the very basic models and you get plenty of kit with a Corsa, they loaded them up option wise.
The Fiesta usually has a bit less but they do drives really well.

As they made and sold so many, you want have to look far for a good one.

IF you think your budget is £6k, then it's not really, it needs to be £7.5k 'coz the insurance is likely to cost in the region of £1500.

First car, as stated above, use insurance quotes to help inform choice of car.......

....oh, and I forgot, for a first car don't spend more than £1k, so car + insurance = £2.5k.

    ...just saved you £5k :)

My son chose an Alfa Romeo Mito as his first car, he was still 17 when he bought it last year and insurance on a 0.9 Turbo (105 BHP) was £600 for the year.  If he'd chosen a Corsa (like my daughter did) it would have been £900 and for a similar specification/performance Fiesta would have been £1400.

and this is exactly why you look at the isurance on POTENTIAL purchses before buying :)

actually, it looks like it's come down a bit since my oldest got his first car - got the (unpopular) car, plus insurance plus year's tax for what they were asking just for insurance on fiesta, corsa, etc

Totota Aygo (also known as Citroen C1/Peugeot 107 IIRC). Cheap to run, cheap to fix. There should be lots about and it should be relatively easy to find a decent one.
i have to agree with this. Both my son and daughter have C1s now. My son (22) has had is for almost 4 years on a 58 plate and we recently purchased one for my daughter (20) on a 62 plate with 51K miles FSH for £3K

My sons has had various jobs done on it. Here are some of the prices as examples. Windscreen washer bottle pump £7, new clutch £80, new indicator stalk £10 and best of all they do around 60miles to the gallon.
The insurance is group 2 and this is around £300 per year currently.

    great value, cheap motoring...

The smallest cars like those mentioned so far tend to be more expensive to insure than something slightly larger as they are common starter cars.

Have a look at something like the Hyundai i20 or if you do want smaller the i10. They have 5 year manufacturer warranties so you may find something in your budget that is still in that warranty.
Kia has a 7 year warranty. I think the Picanto and i10 are the same car.

The Niro EV has many of the same underneath bits as my Ioniq, so Kia and Hyundai work closely together.

That one is willing to warranty their cars for 7 years should say a lot about the design (from experience so far, very good).
