So Energy

Martin opened a topic about energy firms and setting high direct debits and he mentioned 3 companies as I remember but not my company which is So energy. On the day he opened the subject up I logged into my account and indeed the company had doubled my monthly payment. I went into the section that allows you to adjust and up date your monthly direct debit amount and I could see it recommended a figure that was 50% more per month and not 100% more. I tried to change it and did get it down a few pounds but not by that much. The next day the online facility to adjust the monthly payment had been removed and no longer allows you to do so. I have e mailed them to ask why but so far I am on the run around. Is this just me or are others finding the adjustment facility in your energy on line account has been de activated or removed as myn has ? I am a little suspicious about what may actually be going on here ?

Have you calculated what you future cost will be based on your energy use for the last 12 months, taking into account any existing debt or credit?

Depending on the split between gas and electricity, or day and night rates and if you are coming of a fixed tariff your direct debit might not just double, but treble.

That your direct debit has doubled does not mean that you are paying to much on its own.

If you need help making the calculations let us know what your old  direct debit was, what you used in KWh for gas and electricity, if you are in debt or credit and by how much, and your new rates and standing charges.

  • I'm also with SO Energy. The ability to adjust payment amounts is also missing for my account, it used to be there. One other person posted on here recently about their ability to amend amounts no longer being available.

I still have the option to lower my DD when I logon,  but whenever I try to I get....
"An error occurred while trying to update your payment amount. If the error persists, please contact us."
I'm thinking of just cancelling my DD (recently doubled) and paying by card each month.

Like so many people that ask the same questions on this board pounds and pence mean nothing.

You have to know your yearly usage in kWh for each energy you have and then once you let people on this board know that they can help you work out if your supplier is trying it on👍

I emailed them a month ago & got no reply ,  still have too higher DD so they done nothing about it.
It is £185 each month for the year.
Based on my credit & projected amount it should be £110 or so.
I tried the option to pay lower for 6 months then higher for 6 month as I am 2 months into this contract.
But it has defaulted back to same each month.
Like SpanishBlue the option to lower it is conveniently broken it appears.
I may wait a little, then  cancel the DD if they fail to answer again.
  • Many thanks to al for the replies. I can up date my post with some good news. It is not a quick solution but it works. I sent an e mail into So Energy asking why the facility had been removed. I was told there was concern with people setting their monthly payment too low and getting into debt. If you e mail them and ask them to review it for you they will work out a new figure and e mail back asking if you wish to adopt it. I replied yes and it was reduced the same day.

Had no  problem when I requested to stay on old payments, of course we all will need to increase eventually.
