Virgin Media Hub 5

I have just been offered the Hub 5 by VM.  When I received my current Hub 3 I had problems with the WiFi and my ageing Mac Book Pro (2015 model).  Basically the connection randomly dropped.  To fix this I use the Hub in modem mode and have a separate WiFi router. So I am hoping the Hub 5 will resolve this and I can ditch the router.

Anyone out there with experience or thoughts on the Hub 5?  Please share.

Kind Regards,

Bill

First search on the web comes up with this:

I have a Hub3 and like you have added my own WiFi router because the Hub3 is dreadful in that respect. THe Hub5 does have WiFi6, but I wouldn't hold my breath for generally improved WiFi. What I do find annoying is that the Hub3 uses about 11W constantly, even in modem only mode. I think I read somewhere the Hub5 uses a little bit more. When you add the load of your own decent router to that, you've got a fair load on 24/7.

Thanks for that, it does not bode well...

My Mum has the Hub 5 and it works fine, she had to switch over as her old one died. I set up things for her as whilst she is capable herself it took me less than ten minutes to add all devices where as it would have taken her longer. It works find with an old Samsung Smart TV, fire sticks, Samsung Phone and Tablet, old Laptop, new Laptop, my Laptop, Canon wireless printer, Google Home and other people's phones and laptops when visiting.

Some people will always have problems, but in general it seems adequate.

Update on Virgin Media HUB5.  Installed today, there was a problem with activation but having spent 30 minutes waiting on the telephone I did get through to a human and the issue was sorted.  It appears to work well.

Of slight concern is the front light is flashing green, according to the documentation this means the HUB5 is downloading and updating.  But the light has been on for several hours now so I doubt that is correct.

    Kind Regards,
