To add (albeit a bit of a generalisation):

Cookies and site data allow (albeit not their only purpose) an internet server to track your activity.

Browser history allows you (or someone with the right level of access to your computer) to track your activities (see what sites you have visited).

These are quite different types of privacy.

There are lots of ways to fingerprint both a device and user.

If you want a more security focussed browser based on the Chromium engine then look at Brave rather than Chrome. It has more personal data security measures that you can configure.

So is it more important to ensure that cookies and site data are cleared?

I am still finding my way around what Chrome does.
I wasn't particularly concerned about security issues, I was confused about why the problem occurred.
When I know a lot more about Chrome, if I'm concerned with its security, I can have a look at Brave then.

I’m not sure, I am out road testing a new iPad so can’t verify until I get home with my real pcs but the feature described is a browser history not cookie feature.

It depends what you want to hide/keep private and who from!
