Sainsbury Eon Smart meter reading

I submitted meter readings last week as I don't have a smart meter.  Today I have been issued a bill ignoring my readings and it's labelled as a smart meter reading.  How is that possible?  Or should I believe they have just made this up??  Has this happened to anyone else???

  • It depends.  How close to your your customer read is the smart meter reading?  At some point Eon/Sainsbury will be picking up your smart meter readings directly.  I've been with Eon Next since October 2021 and no smart meter reads have appeared on my account although my last bill saw my electricity read as being from my Smart Meter (reads were same as I submitted at 0005 on the appointed day for monthly bill).  Perhaps they are starting to pick them up from my meters.

Thanks but the thing is I don't have a smart meter of any sort.  Never have.  Or if I do it's never been used by any other energy provider for the last 4+ years I've lived here.  And if there is one I've no idea where it might be - previous owners left the house empty so it would have to be well hidden!

The reading on the bill isn't far off what's showing currently.  I'm just boggle to think that they've hooked one up somewhere without me knowing about it!

Your post doesn’t make any sense. The smart meter isn’t the little device that sits in your kitchen. If you have a smart meter it will be where all meters usually are (for example, in the meter box). It is possible that you have a SMETS1 meter which has just been upgraded and connected to the DCC Network.

Check to see if the serial number on your meter matches that on the bill. There might be a mix-up...

It may be that you are being billed for someone else's usage, although that usually happens with flats.
Check that the serial number on the meter matches that shown on your bill and do the Meter Sanity Test.

Wow  - it appears there is a smart meter!!  I suspect it's the right one (not a neighbours) as the actual meter has a reading close to that on the bill - the difference being the couple of days in between I would guess.  Wonder why no one else was aware of this.

    Thanks all!!

If you want to double-check, tell us the make and model of the meter (or post a photo). There are enough meter geeks on the forum for someone to know the answer :)
