Smart meter installation, separate suppliers

I'm with So Energy/EDF for electricity/gas. I just had an electricity smart meter installed; the gas smart meter is being fitted tomorrow. When I asked the engineer if the IHD would work with the gas smart meter he replied that it wouldn't, and that the new gas meter wouldn't connect to the comms hub at all, due to my having different suppliers. Is this correct?

Due to SOLR my gas is supplied by EDF and my electricity is supplied by British Gas. I had an electricity smart meter fitted by British Gas last December and a few months later a gas smart meter fitted by EDF. The gas meter must have connected to the comms hub almost instantly as I could see my gas usage through the Bright app. It took several days but my gas usage now also shows up on my IHD so it must be possible.

The IHD has an inbuilt gas proxy meter which does the clever bit and converts gas volume to kWh and cost using data from your gas meter. The installer that you spoke with needs some further training.

At present, I have SMETS1 meters for gas and electricity that were originally fitted by Ovo and which subsequently worked with Economy Energy and Octopus. EDF will attend within the next fortnight to change the gas meter. Perhaps, I will get a separate IHD for gas.
I have osteoarthritis in my hands so I speak my messages into a microphone using Dragon. Some people make "typos" but I often make "speakos".

I confess that I have no idea how a SMETS2 gas meter can be paired to a SMETS1 comms hub - agnostic gas meters perhaps?

The gas engineer confirmed that the IHD would display the information from the gas meter. Unfortunately, more than 48 hours after installation, I'm still waiting for the IHD to synchronise with the electricity meter.

I have two suppliers. Had two smart meters fitted a couple of weeks apart. The second one, think it was SSE for the gas, said theirs couldn't use the IHD thing. So there are now two of them.

Unless SSE has fitted a second communications hub which is unlikely as the communications hub is attached to, and powered by, the electricity meter, then what you were told is wrong. The communications hub has a built in gas proxy meter. This proxy meter takes data from the gas meter once every 30 minutes and it converts volume of gas used into kWh using a fixed calorific value. The comms hub also establishes the Home Area Network (the HAN) that the provides the connection for IHD.

Each communications hub can have up to 4 IHD/CAD devices connected to it. If the SSE device has been connected to the communications hub, then unless it is a gas only IHD (and I am not aware of any), then it should shown both gas and electricity. It would be interesting to know what action the installer took to connect it to the communications hub?

No idea if it makes any difference to what you've said, but I just checked , and it was the other way round.
The gas one was done first. I mentioned to the fitter that the electric one was being installed a couple of weeks later. He said, that's no problem, they'll just use the same IHD.
Then when eon came to fit, he said that's not possible, you'll just have to have two IHDs.
Incidentally, the gas one with SSE seems to work fine billing wise. The electric one doesn't.

How did they commission the gas meter? It needs to be paired with a communications hub that is usually connected to the SMETS2 electric meter. Have they fitted a standalone communications hub?

Sorry. I have no idea how they commissioned the gas meter . Or indeed, what that even means. But the gas readings and billings are working fine .
