HP TouchSmart 520 PC RAM

Hi

I have the above PC.  I want to add some memory to it.  Currently it has 4 GB.  This is what get when I perform a scan on my system:

Slot "BANK1", 4 GB, Speed "1067 MHz DIMM", Type "DDR3", Manufacturer "Samsung"

x64-based PC

Could you assist me to get additional ram?  I believe the maximum amount is 8 GB according to a web search.  Thank you.

  • I've used Crucial's System Scanner to check possible RAM and storage upgrades on PCs

Of course it will suggest Crucial's products be used to upgrade but that's up to you. Good place to start.

    Thanks.  It suggests this.

But would it be sure to be compatible with what I have installed already?

https://uk.crucial.com/store/advisor - "If you order on Crucial.com and use our Crucial System Scanner or Crucial Advisor™ tool to purchase an upgrade, we guarantee compatibility – or your money back. That’s our 45-day no-hassle guarantee."

Can't guarantee to work with what you have, nobody will guarantee that.  But if you buy two sticks and they don't work, send them back.

Re: the SSD that machine will take any SSD, but you need to make sure you get one that comes with a bracket (or buy one separately).  It uses a "normal" size desktop drive, 3.5" width drive, but SSDs are 2.5" in width.  It'll go inside but won't have anything to hold/screw onto.  Brackets are cheap though: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Akasa-AK-HDA-03-2-5-3-5-Inch-SSD-Adapter/dp/B005ZWGFAC

Thanks for the advice.  But why would I purchase two sticks if I only need one?

    This may explain it.

Dual Channel vs Quad Channel Memory:

Dual Channel memory is a bit faster than single channel, but not by much. Dual-channel means that you have two identical modules of memory (not one stick of memory), and it is running in dual channel mode.

Quad Channel is more effective than Dual Channel. Quad Channel means that you have four identical modules of memory, and it is running in quad-channel mode. If the computer has two slots for memory, then it will only be able to work in Single or Dual Channel mode.

I have a question, why on the suggested memory upgrade does 1 stick of memory cost £25~ but 2 cost £90?

Because they have set their pricing that way and someone will buy it.

Don't waste money on new RAM for a ten year old device. The difference in performance will be negligible. Spend £5, not £25: https://uk.webuy.com/product-detail?id=smem2q2aa

SSD for much better performance, but you will need one of these: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/114228717109 or similar, plus the solid state drive. Cheapest SSD from around £16.50. Don't bother to spend too much.

You could search on ebay for your existing memory part.
They may even have it in a Cexx shop.
Open the memory slot and take A picture of the label on the SIMM.
