PIP payment sent to old, closed account

I sent. letter to my PIP office to tell them about a change in my phone number and to request my benefits to be paid in a new bank account. This letter was sent first class on the 27th of April. I was supposed to get my benefits today 17th of May. They are usually really good at paying them into my account minutes past midnight but i got nothing today.

I am afraid they have made the transfer to the old account. That old account is completely closed and I cant even access that bank as I don't bank with them anymore. I am on the phone to dwp but have been waiting for 20+ minutes, they can take ages!

What is the likelihood that I will get those benefits paid in the correct account??
What happens when money is sent to a bank account that is closed?

For sure 2 weeks its time enough for them to change the details. I changed my bank account in the same manner in 2020 with no issues (via letter, sent to the same address, with the same template just different account, and all was paid correctly to the new account the following payment date).

I am really worried they will say that money is lost and I will be nearly 350 quid short...

Thanks

They may not have received the letter, even if it was sent first class. It's not unusal for it to take a few weeks for post to be added to the system and it's not classed as arrviing until this is done. Payment for PIP would have been sent a few days before your payment date too.
If payment was sent to your old account and bounces back then they won't pay your money until it's been received back to them. I have no idea how long this take.
When changing banks/accounts it's always better to ring them, if possible.
  • i dont call cos i have massive anxiety they should be aware of this with people with disabilities...

Even if they are aware of this, that doesn't help speed up the process of mail going to DWP.
  • I know.... I appreciate that. Still on the phone! The. money will bounce cos that account is closed so I expect they will transfer the money to the new account once that happens??

    Yes, as previously advised.
  • so it has "only" taken me 45 mins on the phone to get through lol. The letter was already scanned on the system but for some reason it hadn't been updated in the actual database. The lady was very kind anyway, so the money will bounce back and it will go to my new account in around a week time.
