  • There is a recent article hot-linked by Yahoo News stating that up to 1-in-6 of the older gas meters (models from 1983 to 2000) are over-registering i.e. overcharging customers:

Since a lot of people will have a gas meter (model from 1983 -2000) including me, I contact my energy supplier accordingly to ask for a meter accuracy test.:(

Well, there is a catch (22).:(

    Part of their reply:

We can complete an accuracy test on your meter, this is chargeable to the amount of £93 this would be refunded if the meter was proven to be recorded incorrectly. To test a gas meter the meter would be replaced and the meter would then be sent for accuracy.:(

Does anyone know of a way to check whether the model of my gas meter belongs to the bad batch prior to committing a £93 gamble?

Or you could just buy another meter and fit it in line with the original one..

  • Hi C_Mababejive,

Thank you for the link of the Daily Mail article which actually states the models of the those potentially defective meters.:D

However it may breach the contract with your gas supplier if we install DIY gas meter in line with the official one just to compare their accuracy. Also, not everyone is capable of installing gas meter 'safely' and the gas meter box may not have enough space for two............._pale_

There would be no breach of contract. The meter would be fitted after the suppliers meter and before any appliances. It would form part of the internal installation and it could be fitted by any GSR installer who has the required endorsement on his card. Even in outside boxes,it would be quite possible to fit the secondary meter inside.

Of course we would then have another conundrum.

The secondary meter would of course be new and manufactured to/complying with the relevant BS.

However it could still be potentially inaccurate itself !

I would suggest though that what we would be looking for is the dgree of difference between the two meters. If they keep pace, then i guess they could both be deemed accurate.
