Car tax direct debit bounce?

My car tax is due to come out by DD tomorrow and I don't have enough money in the account to cover it. I pay monthly but wont have the cash to pay for it until wednesday next week. Will it bounce a certain number of times before It's cancelled? 

Also, how long before the status of my car will change online from Taxed to Untaxed? I can leave the car on the road but don't want to declare sorn just in case someone can lend me the cash to pay the car tax.

Your bank should know, but generally they will try twice in the same day. You might get charged for an unpaid DD. Your best bet is to borrow the cash and pay into your bank straight away.
I expect it won't take long to become untaxed - it's the govt. after all. Not had the situation myself but could be classed as untaxed pretty quickly, in which case you could receive a fine. Doesn't matter if you take it off road, you either have to declare SORN or pay the road tax.
