Damaged roofing felt

My house was built in 1956 and the roofing felt is torn in a number of places. The tiles are fine and we haven't had any leakages but we would like to increase the insulation and wonder if we should have the felt replaced before we do this. Is this essential and will we notice the difference? Would it be better to reuse the existing tiles or is it better to have new ones?
