Do I have to pay?

Our smart meter has not been measuring gas since October 2021.
We are currently paying estimated bills for it, however they have no previous data from us as we joined EDF in August 2021.
Do we have to pay for the gas when there is no data of how much we have used?

Do you mean the meter has failed completely and not reading usage, or do you mean it is reading usage but not transmitting that usage to EDF?0

Yes you'll have to pay. They will either estimate your usage based on that of a typically similar house, or they'll charge you an approximate amount and when they have some genuine reading records from the next few months, adjust the charge to reflect a more reasonable estimate.
e.g. charge you £70 a month for the last six months, then when your actual usage is known, refund or charge you the extra if it turns out that £60 or £80 a month was more realistic.0 -

Have been attempting to get them to fix it.

You will have to pay, it doesn't mean free gas. What you have to pay can be negotiated though. If you think its too much ask if you can provide readings after it's fixed and get them to use those figures for the estimate. You could then be refunded the difference.
