When you say 'no one knows' who owns them have you just asked the sellers?  Or the neighbours who have lived there longest?
Was the initial building in the 1950s a coherent development?  If so, a starting point would be that the developers owned the land, including the road, and may still do so if it never transferred to anyone else.
But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,
Had the whole of their cash in his care.

Interesting point about neighbours. I haven't moved yet, so no, not yet. Most of the houses are bungalows and seem to change hands fairly regularly (ours is about 5 times in 20 years).

With regards to the developers, the land was split into plots and sold by a charitable corporation (which has since been dissolved) and has some restrictions on. Nothing onerous. Was sold to a developer (I think) who has added further restrictions (which I've applied to LR for as not available online). Because the road and a couple of parcels of land are not registered, I'm struggling to find out if this corporation owned the land or it was owned by the parish council or whatever.

Can I add by the way thanks to everyone who has contributed to the thread so far.
