Wait time for ppi tax refund

sent in a claim to HMRC June 2021 after many phone calls finally got letter Feb 2022 saying sending form back as amounts where wrong - no form received to date. So made internet claim in March.  Just phoned as still no movement and were told someone would phone back within 8 yes EIGHT weeks!!!! this is beyond a joke as it will be a year since first applying if I owed the tax man I would be in so much trouble!! the amoount is nearly £600 money we could really use its so annoying. Not sure if there is any more we can do as we are up agianst the government  but would welcome any advice.

  • Did you submit the form R40 with the interest element of the PPI refund only on the form?

HMRC delays are a fact of life, there is a long winded argument about the need for more tax workers at HMRC as they receive more than it costs to employ them by about 5x but of course the government's friends don't like their tax affairs being looked into too closely

No.  You haven't been waiting a year.   First time you got it wrong.  Your second submission was in March, just 2 months ago right before tax year changeover.  That is the busiest time of the year for HMRC.  So, 8 weeks is reasonable.   Indeed, most people are waiting longer.

  • My wife started her PPI tax refund claim at the end of July 2021. After filling out the R40 (twice) numerous phone calls and sending in copies of wage slips , pensions and P60's she is still waiting to hear from HMRC
