Learner driver insurance for twins

Advice needed on how to insure twins on provisional licenses and whether to put car in one of their names or parents? We are getting a small car for them to share and would like to take them out to practice alongside their lessons.

If its their car it probably should be in their name but that's up to you.

The insurance is more important that you are honest about who the main driver is and not "front" the policy by having it in a parents name when the kid(s) are the main drivers.
  • Thanks for reply.  Just need to flip a coin as to which one goes on the log book and down as the main driver then!  Oh joy, I’m looking forward to that outcome; one will be put out.  I thought parent ownership would ease the fighting but if that’s how it needs to be done, then so be it.  Am I right in thinking any parent with a full driving license can take them out to practice in the car without being a named driver?

You don't need to be a named driver to be in the passenger seat. Just over 21 with a full licence for more than 3 years (I think its 3 years).

However, it often reduced the premium to have an experienced driver on the policy, and what if you need to takeover driving for any reason, you will need to be insured to do that.

Ownership and registered keeper is broadly irrelevant... most insurers are comfortable with a parent/child relationship between the insured and vehicle owner. A child being the owner and parent the policyholder is more likely to smell of fronting.

Any adult over 21 with a full uk license for over 3 years can take them out without needing to be on the insurance... doesn't have to be a parent, however being on the insurance is sensible in case for some reason the person needs to take over the driving.
  • You are also allowed to swap around no claims e.g. insure twin 1 for this year and twin 2 as named driver, then next year twin 2 is main driver, twin 1 is named so at least they can both (hopefully) get a years NCD. Obviously adjust as planned e.g. if twin 1 is going to a uni 400 miles away and living on campus and twin 2 is 5 miles away and living at home
