Transferring fixed rate to a new build?

Hi

I need your guidance and help if possible! We are leaving our rental home in the next week or two as the landlord is selling the property. We are in the midst of buying a new build but it won't be ready until the beginning of July. We will be temporarily staying at my parents for a month until we can move in to our new house.

I'm currently on a fixed dual energy bill until February 22 which would save my little family some money when the prices increase in October.

My issue is, I'd like this rate transferring to the new build when it's built, however, Eon won't do it as they have no household to charge for the month that we are missing in action. Does anyone have any ideas on this situation?

I'm thinking about not telling them we have moved until we physically move into the property and provide them with meter readings of the rental property on the day I left but I dont think this will wash..

You're inviting problems if you try to buck the system.  You need to give E.On the final meter readings on the day your tenancy ends.  You cannot transfer your tariff or supplier to the new property.  You need to give E.On your new contact address.
You need to register with the incumbent supplier(s) at the new property and send meter readings on the day you take possession.  Make sure you read the meters yourself, don't let anyone do it for you.
Having registered with the incumbent(s) you are then free to seek another supplier, but E.On probably won't offer you your old tariff again, and probably won't even accept you as a new customer.

Thanks for your advice Gerry. I was hoping there'd be a way round it but deep down I knew I was knackered!
  • that wont be possible to do. Whoever moves in to the new property should register with Eon, at which point your contract will end with whatever meter reads they give them. Therefore I would advise not doing that as they could over inflate the opening reads.

You'll need to provide the with your end reads so they can close your account and send you an accurate final bill, otherwise it could get quite messy!

I'm afraid you'll just have to go with the SVR of the new build once you move in. Follow the usual path - take meter reads and contact the current supplier to open an account to get set up (make sure the meter serial number matches the property - there can be some confusion with new builds in regards to plot number/house numbers) - you can then look at moving suppliers if you so wish.

Also try the Meter Sanity Test.  Several forumites have discovered that they had been paying for someone else's usage, sometimes for several years.
  • Some suppliers used to allow tariff transfer; however, as suggested above, it still involved the consumer signing up first with the deemed supplier before initiating a transfer back to the old supplier. Clearly, the deemed supplier would be entitled to charge for the period up to the transfer away.
