Hi there people,I hope you all had a great christmas.
The tribe all met up at my DS2 s home Xmas Day afternoon. A few people had other obligations, and 3 great grandkids were with other family  but still, most family, kids, grandkids and patners were there -18 in all. We had a great time, did a quiz and a game, and all the rest were going strong when Mr Dusty and I left after 3 hours! :D . No visitors at all yesterday or today, and I have just enjoyed watching Christmas Carol,Muppett  and Michael Caine version. I also read the Christmas Carol book, too, which counted as my 100th and final read of my final challenge of the year over on my SF website. Didnt think I would do it,so very happy, though cutting it fine. I have almost completed the basic 50 SF/Fantasy books I expect to read next year..
Got £45 in book vouchers, and have already bought 2 books Also got 2 bottles of whiskey,I will work through the first one this week, and put the other one away for my birthday end of January, and in general get back to alcohol free days as soon as possible. My AFD target for this month was 25 AFD days. I got up to 24,so somehow I have to reach the 25/25  day within the next 4 days. I've never missed a target since I joined up on MSE Cutting Down thread back in May,so want to finish the year on a high note.

Morning all,and its a really miserable dark morning,Mr Dusty and I can barely see each other across the room it is do dark. Its 5C,but because of the nasty wind, leaden grey cloudy sky and heavy rain,it feels much worse and is miserable, but nothing like the terrible conditions in North America. These bad storms were once classed a once in a hundred year storms, then became once in a decade, now are every couple of years. s A lot of people have died, but they will find frozen bodies for weeks. :(Now I have to post my challenges.

Beguiling Board Game Countdown: Jaunting Through January with Trivial Pursuit!

The next entry in our Board Game Countdown is the 8th most popular board game, Trivial Pursuit!

Trivial Pursuit is a board game in which winning is determined by a player's ability to answer trivia and popular culture questions. Players move their pieces around a board, the squares they land on determining the subject of a question they are asked from six possible categories. Each correct answer allows the player's turn to continue; a correct answer on one of the six "category headquarters" spaces earns a plastic wedge which is slotted into the answerer's playing piece. The object of the game is to collect all six wedges from each "category headquarters" space, and then return to the center "hub" space to answer a question in a category selected by the other players.

Questions are split into six categories, with each one having its own color to readily identify itself; in the classic version of Trivial Pursuit, the Geography category is blue, Entertainment is pink, History is yellow, Arts & Literature is originally brown, later purple, Science & Nature is green, and Sports & Leisure is orange. The game includes a board, playing pieces, question cards, a box, small plastic wedges to fit into the playing pieces, and a die.

The game was created on December 15, 1979, in Montreal, Quebec, by Chris Haney, a photo editor for Montreal's The Gazette, and Scott Abbott, a sports editor for The Canadian Press. After finding pieces of their Scrabble game missing, they decided to create their own game. With the help of John Haney and Ed Werner, they completed development of the game, which was released in 1981.

The rights to the game were initially licensed to Selchow and Righter, then to Parker Brothers. In 2008 Hasbro bought the full rights, for US$80 million. As of 2014, more than 100 million games had been sold in 26 countries and 17 languages.

Over the years, numerous editions of Trivial Pursuit have been produced, usually specializing in various fields. The original version is known as the Genus edition (or Genus I). Several different general knowledge editions (such as Genus II) have followed. Other editions include Junior Edition, All-Star Sports, Baby Boomers, 1980s, All About the 80s, 1990s, Harry Potter, and others. In total, over 100 different editions in different languages have been printed.

In October 1984, Fred L. Worth, author of The Trivia Encyclopedia and other trivia books, filed a $300 million lawsuit against the distributors of Trivial Pursuit. He claimed that more than a quarter of the questions in the game's Genus Edition had been taken from his books, even to the point of reproducing typographical errors and deliberately placed misinformation. One of the questions in Trivial Pursuit was "What was Columbo's first name?" with the answer "Philip". That information had been fabricated to catch anyone who might try to violate his copyright.

The inventors of Trivial Pursuit acknowledged that Worth's books were among their sources, but argued that this was not improper and that facts are not protected by copyright. The district court judge agreed, ruling in favor of the Trivial Pursuit inventors. The decision was appealed, and in September 1987 the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit upheld the ruling. Worth asked the Supreme Court of the United States to review the case, but the Court declined.

There have been various television game show adaptations, in the US, the UK, Spain and the Soviet Union. There have also been arcade versions, computer and video game versions and an online game.

    Fun Facts About Trivial Pursuit:

    • The design of the game board is based off of a ship’s wheel—six separate spokes leading to the center or winner’s circle.

    • The artwork for the game was by 18-year-old Michael Wurstlin. He was unemployed at the time and took the job because his unemployment insurance had run out. He chose to invest in five shares of stock and earned enough money to start Wurstlingroup, a successful marketing company based in Toronto.

    • While most Trivial Pursuit game sets can be bought at an affordable price, there are expensive collector’s items. Zontik Games offers Trivial Pursuit game sets that cost a small fortune; the price will depend on whether the pieces are pewter or sterling silver. The board is made of calfskin with silver or gold embossments.

    • By 1993, Games Magazine awarded Trivial Pursuit a spot in the “Games Hall of Fame.” Induction into the Games Hall of Fame is one of the highest honors available to those working in the gaming and entertainment industries. A game that started with two men enjoying a few beers over Scrabble eventually became a legend.

    • Scott Abbott retained some success after selling the rights to Trivial Pursuit. In 2005, he obtained ownership of the Ontario Hockey League team, the North Bay Battalion. After becoming owner, he assisted in building a hockey club for the league. This hard work went on to earn him an induction into the Brampton Sports Hall of Fame.

    The Challenge:

    1. Read a book set in Canada OR A book in which someone is given an award OR has something made of a precious metal on the cover.

    2. Read a book that includes a lawsuit and/or courtroom scene OR has a ship/sailing related word in the title OR read a book that has been published in more than one edition.

    3. Read a book with a cover that is predominantly blue, pink, yellow, brown, purple, green or orange OR that has a significant teenage character OR has a character who plays hockey.

  • So sad to see Pele died.Great player, but also a sweet kind man, which is partly why he is so revered. Somehow I dont see such reverence being laid on Ronaldo in 50 years time! :D
I watched Pele way back in the late 60s,and back then football was a brutal game, very few of the modern prevention of violence and viciousness. I used to say that Pele was such a brilliant dribblerc  and so fast at running down the pitch because he wanted to avoid people kicking his legs out from under him.But he would get back up and continue, without showing anger, just total concentration. Wonder how Ronaldo would react to such treatment? :D:D

The SF site I use is Worlds Without End, a site whose purpose is to list all the different SF,fantasy and horror awards and lists. We nerds then click off books on the lists as we complete them. :D
do check it out! So many lists,so many challenges and fantastically detailed author and title info for a host of authors. Its my go to site for those genres. I stumbled on it in 2012 and have been a strong supporter ever since, till my health has deteriorated so much I have cut down drastically, but I still faithfully track all my challenges and reads on there. I do get peeved that they dont list ANY self published stuff at all. They assume its all rubbish. Could be right, but it can be fun

Just a quick thank you for this, Dusty, it will keep me going for the year  :)

  • I've been a Man U fan sincethe days of Georgie Best. Remember the Charlton brothers who used ti ride their pushbikes to the training ground after a days work. I saw the glory days under Sir Alex and the young lads he formed into a formidable team against all the pundits predictions.
Well Geargie lost his way and I remember watching Alfie Boe with tears in his eyes singing "Bring him Home" from Les Mis. Such a waste but as the song said He was only a boy when he arrived from Belfast in Manchester and put in lodgings with a landlady. Fame went to his head and he was a target for gold diggers. hit the booze and it was such a waste.
Sir Matt Busby changed how young players were managed and Sir Alex had a tight regime.
Ronaldo was a joy to have when he first signed but his recent behaviour has been like a spoilt child and although I always admired him as a player I'm very relieved Ten Hag has shown him the door.
His recent behaviour was out of order as Sir Alex had asked the board to bring him back to strengthen the team and he'd let him down too.
Both Sir Alex and Ole Solksjaer had wanted the new wonder boy now at Man City at ManU but once more the Glazers had objected..If Ronaldo hadn't been earning those unbelievable amounts of money Erling Haarland would have been performing the magic at OldTrafford rather than  The Etihad Stadium .
With Pele his talent and gentleness will live on over the years. Ronaldo however who had such talent has proved in recent years to be a greedy self absorbed brat and I'm glad Ten Hag came along in time to send him on his way before he bankrupted the club and demoralised any more of the players trying so hard.
