Chance would be a fine thing. He thinks he's fantastic that he made his breakfast when I was out yesterday. I had to go through the procedure of how to turn on the ceramic hob about 4 times before I left, and missed my bus in the process! Oh well,he does all the washing up these days, and he ironed all the bedding that I washed this morning. I hate washing up AND ironing, so at least he did something. He also does all his own clothes washing and ironing, but cooking is a no-no. At 82 I cant see him changing. Lots of takeaways ahead in the future!

We are trying to get past the Civil War gap too. Have made it with probate records for all but one family. Having a problem with Queen Elizabeth I also - she apparently took the property away from one member of the family for treason and gave it to another member of the family with same name in 1578 or 1579! We don't know it the original person got the land back or not.2

We don't know it the original person got the land back or not.At least you are dealing with well known educated literate families. When you are dealing with ordinary poor farm workers and the like, the parish records is about it for info. When the local vicar was lazy,or forbidden to make records,or left the record volume where the mice could nibble it,or the leaking roof dripped on it,thats it! All those people become forgotten to history. And that same name business! I had one nice little maternal family line. That line merge with another line in 1850s Gateshead, but the Waltons had come from Cumbria, after years, even centuries of being lead miners. I deduce from the dates that they moved over the Pennines to work in coal mines when the lead mines gave out.The Waltons usually had about six sons. As was customary every father would name his sons after his own fatherthen himself, and then after his own brothers. John of course was a popular name( because the gospels state specifically that John was the disciple Jesus loved. So after tracing the family back to early 1700s mining hamlets it seems John Waltons are everywhere, and the records never bother giving a wife or mother's details to distinguish them. Totally impssible to work out which John Walton was my specific ancestor,so full stop.John Walton is lost in the Cumbrian mountains

Got off to sleep quite well last night, despite the painful knee etc,but when I woke at 4 for the obligatory bathroom run,I couldnt get back to sleep because of the pain. After thirty minutes I gave up and went downstairs and took some ibuprofen, because they are anti inflammatory and reduce the swelling.Spent time on the computer while they took effect, and by 6 pm I went back to bed and got another 90 mins sleep.Paracetemol, the surgery's painkiller of choice, do nothing at all for me. I know people worry about stomach problems caused by ibuprofen,so I dont overindulge. I have allocated myself 4 doses of 2 pills.,a dose every 4 hours, then thats it.But already they are helping enormously. The swelling is going down, movement is easierDear me ,I do spend an inordinate amount of time whingeing about my health. So its verboten for at least the rest of the day.Tomorrow doubtless I will be presenting probably quite different symptoms from my extensive selection!Off to sort dinner now. roasties, carrots and chicken pie.1

I think I have 25 Henry Porters in my family tree and about 20 Williams. I also have problems with the gap caused by the Civil war and since my family were mainly farm labourers many of them were illiterate so we find that family names can be spelt in several different ways. They also had a habit of re-using the first name so if a child died they would give the next child the same name. I've been fairly lucky as most of my family have stayed in the same area since the 1600s and the local family history society has produced copies of the parish records-on microfiche at first and then on CD and download.2

The Shields family left some wills that we are working with. The rest appear to be farmers also. We are still in the 1800s on some of them, lots of farmworkers and tenants - and she has at least one Walton line too where we are stuck. You are right about the names. Even have one family here in Maryland (originally from Scotland) where the man married a Catherine, had 8 children, she died, he married another Catherine, and had 8 more children. About 20 years apart - exact same names in the same order - everyone thought it was two different families but thank goodness we found his will finally. And it refers to the children as Catherine the elder, Catherine the younger, Ninian the elder, and Ninian the younger - all 16 of them were still living. Sometimes I think the ancestors did strange things like this just to keep us involved in looking for them later. I does help keep the mind active though looking for them. I've been researching since 1962. Still have a long way to go on some families.3
