Does this mean i need to declare points to my insurance now or only at renewall?

Ok so I don't currently have any points on my licence however i'm pretty sure i got caught speeding the other day and i'm likely to get points (i'm aware it's stupid to speed but for what it's worth it was accidental rather than purposefully speeding just to speed, not that that makes it better really)

But when looking up what getting points means etc.. one of the things i found was that apparently a lot of insurers only need you to inform them of points when you renew but that some want to be told straight away and to check your policy for details, so i looked at my policy and the only bit that i think relates reads :

You must tell us immediately if:
• The status of your or any named driver’s licence changes in any other way.

Does this mean they want to be informed straight away, i'm not sure if getting points counts as the "status" of my driving licence changing as the part before that under things they need to know is talking about licence's being revoked or passing tests etc...

I'm with Hastings Direct if that helps.

You may not get any points - depending on the circumstances you may be offered a speed awareness course which most insurers don’t want to know about.
If you do get points for any reason some  insurers want to know straight away. I’d read your t&c as letting them know when it happens. Having been in your situation I decided I’d rather play safe - got an admin fee for updating.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Assuming your policy documents are essentially the same as the ones available on the Hastings Website

then the relevant part is on Page 35 (General conditions, keeping your policy up to date) and says "At renewal, you must tell us if any of the information has changed, including any claims (whether your fault or not), convictions, endorsements, disqualifications and fixed penalties for you or any named drivers."

A reference elsewhere to the status of your licence I'd take as referring to you passing you test, or having your licence revoked, or having its terms changed for medical reasons etc, rather than merely an endorsement.

Hi, I'm also with Hastings Direct and as Aretnap says above, you have to tell them at renewal. You should be able to login to your car insurance details online and just double check the T&Cs there.

Don't forget that you haven't actually been accused of anything yet. And if anything does happen you may be offered the opportunity to go on one of those driving skills courses. I went on one a few years ago and although the fine I had to pay was higher than it would have been had I decided not to go, there was nothing on my driving licence. I did actually find the course to be beneficial although I was doubtful about it before I went. Living and learning.

Just hang on, try not to worry and deal with matters if and when they occur.

Thanks for the replies, unfortunately I'm pretty sure I'll get points as I was 20 over which is a lot, not to downplay it but basically it was a "dual carriage way type" Road, so two lanes in each direction with a central grass divider but it was only a 50 not a 70, I knew that but had a brain fart or lack of awareness and my brain only remembered it wasn't a 70 when I spotted the police camera van.

As I said, it sucks, but it's my own fault, just !!!!!! at myself for the stupid circumstances.

Thanks for the help on the clarification about telling my insurance, I'm not planing on doing anything until I actually get the points etc.. but just wasn't sure if it was a now thing or a renewal thing but certainly seems to me that they only want to know at renewal.

You might still get a speed awareness course. The upper limit is 10% + 9mph which is 64mph. Your car speedo could be over reading by 110% + 6.25mph so your actual speed may be around 60mph.

    Tight but possible.
