Hi, this error is coming up when I try to open my mail program, also the start menu on the bottom left has stopped working.

I've downloaded  Advanced System Repair Pro from pcsystemfix.com which has identified a whole range of problems with my computer. As expected, it asks me to pay for repair.  Should I do this, or are there alternative ways of fixing this?  These are my computers  statistics.

  • Don't pay for the repair application. There are some great Windows repair apps that work and don't need paying for such as tweaking.com but we don't need to go there until we know more about the problem.

Which mail application are you using?

When you say the start menu has stopped working, in what way?

First of all Advanced System Repair Pro will say anything and everything is wrong to get you to pay for it (and it almost certainly won't solve your original problem) so that can go for a start.

As for the original problem - which mail program is it?  Outlook?  Thunderbird? Eudora?  Something else?

Slight update: Restarting has solved these two problems, however the errors were extensive and now I've got the 'advanced system repair' tool popping up all the time.  Also Avast seems to think I'm using a new network to get on line (I'm not).

Uninstall the Advanced system repair and any other bloatware that was installed with it. Do not use any tools like that for diagnosing PC problems, they will always report lots of errors without good reason.

Turning it off and on (rebooting) is always the first port of call with PC problems and in this case has proven its worth.

The Avast message is probably nothing to worry about, could be as simple as your network profile changing from private to public, but do the uninstall above and see where we are.

Your os build is out date use windows update to get all up to date, settings app /update & security/ windows update.
Any reason to use Avast when windows comes with its own software.

Download Belarc Adviser - Non-intrusive it will simply give you a snapshot of your computer and will list any missing MS updates.

I agree with gefnew about Avast - Windows Defender which is free and wull be sitting somewhere on your computer will do everything you need when activated.

My Email doesn't identify itself (see picture below), I think it's a generic version of what MS windows provides?  Since the start button failed as well I don't think it was a problem with the mail.

The Start didn't respond at all, not even with an error message, but its OK now.

Before this my computer kept shutting down a few minutes after starting it.  I noticed one of about 6 Avast processes was pushing the CPU up to 100%, so I disengaged it.  I think it was the one which identifies junk files. It's was probably the first start up after that in which I encountered this software problem.
