Tried to upgrade a seat on an airloine for more room.

Using my clarity credit card to avoid the fees, transaction failed, phoned provider said it's due to the website not updated security or something.

Used my debit card and it worked - but have to pay the transaction fee now!

Worried now is the card even going to work abroad to book UBER/LYFT online which I'm relying on to avoid extra fees!

Then your issue is with the website you were making payment to not with Halifax.

Bit wary if Uber or Lyft are the same, but strange how it allowed me to use my debit card.

You could open a starling bank account very easily if you have a smart phone - debit card, with no fees for foreign transactions. Always good to have a backup when abroad!
