I don’t think I would have made a bad decision in those loss periods…..I knew I was in it for the long haul, and I still am.dunstonh said:I’m afraid I wasn’t paying attention in previous years…that was silly, I know.On the other hand, it prevented you from making a bad decision during those loss periods.Hopefully things will recover in time, but it’s an uncertain world just now.How is now any different to the majority of modern history?
Now, once again, we have an unaccountable autocrat in control of a vast nation…..this time with nuclear weapons, and muttering about using them. And not afraid of invading a neighbour, though it’s not turning out as easy as he thought.0 -
A bit like the Iraq war. Some Western leaders went ahead and invaded a sovereign country with no UN approval, and it turned out to be a big mess/mistake.Callum_J said:

No doubt in ten years time ( or less) there will be another similar situation to Ukraine/Iraq/Afghanistan etc etc3 -
Except unlike Saddam it's likely that Putin does indeed possess WMD this makes it a bigger deal - more chips on the table with worse odds.Albermarle said:

Now, once again, we have an unaccountable autocrat in control of a vast nation…..this time with nuclear weapons,You mean the same as most of the period since the second world war? The period of the peace dividend was an anomaly.
And in most periods of war, the stockmarkets rise.

I think its sometimes better not to pay to much attention as long as its generally going upwards inline with similar investments.Callum_J said:That’s reassuring to know it’s normal in the current climate. My adviser tells me the Vanguard funds are good, is that the general feeling of those with a lot more experience than me?0 -

as others say and a lesson i am just learning, dont check too often , you would get too stressed
most pensions will currently be down at moment , hopefully it turns round later in the year , nobody knows for sure , but the wiser posters on here suggest it always comes back at some point1 -
That will depend on what you are invested in. For example the Nikkei index collapse........Mick70 said:as others say and a lesson i am just learning, dont check too often , you would get too stressed

There is no guarantee it will come back, and if it does it could take a number of years, for example ftse 100 closed at just under 7000 in 1999 and that closing high wasn't surpassed until around 2015It's just my opinion and not advice.0
