Would you hand in rental notice without having exchanged?

We have to follow our rental contract month to give notice so if we dont hand in our notice within the next few days then we cant move until late july. We are looking at exchanging next week then completing 3 weeks later. However there are some concerns exchanging cant happen in the next week

Would you hand in your months notice if the exchange hadnt gone through but there was an agreement?

Im assuming it must be fairly common?

Agreements can easily be broken. Completion dates are only set in stone upon exchange.

Only if I had somewhere to move to temporarily if completion didn't happen as planned. And even then I'd be weighing up the cost benefit between that and just forking out an extra month rent.

No.  If you give valid notice that ends tenancy and you could end up on a park bench.  Wait until at least exchange (which doesn't mean completion definite).

Then negotiate with landlord - who might be keen on early or late tenancy end

Thanks all, we are planning on overlapping so that our we have both houses for a week currently
Our rent would mean losing 1000 out right, however no other local places to go

Do other people wait until completion to hand in notice then?

I exchanged and submitted my notice. It meant a month overlap with the rental and my own home and I moved in a few days later.

It allows a lot of flexibility with arranging removal people, giving the rental a good clean etc.
Mortgage started 2020, aiming to clear 31/12/2029.

It also makes things like having new carpets, decorating, cleaning etc done in your new place much easier while it’s still empty. Then you can move in gradually if you want with no rushing about.
If you will the end, you must will the means.

I absolutely wouldn’t. Either have more overlap or tell the vendor that if exchange doesn’t happen by X date then completion will need to be a couple of weeks later.

Landlord might be flexible about tenancy end date. Have you discussed? If he is, you needn't be tied to the full tenancy period notice -but get any agreement in writing!
But as others have said, do not serve formal notice till you Exchange. Too much uncertainty.....

If I was in rented & handed my notice just before exchange then I would have been right up the Amazon without a toilet roll as things panned out.

Buyer pulled out a day before exchange , that was Feb 14th ... exchanged 2 weeks ago & completing tomorrow (we have now moved out so no problem completing on a Friday)
I would have had 3 months of nowhere to go so as others have said "no exchange, no giving notice"

My landlord was very reasonable.   I was on a monthly rolling contract and had hoped to exchange/complete on 4 March, 'rent' day, but my vendor changed her mind to the 11th.  My landlord allowed me to give five week's notice on condition I allowed prospective tenants to view.  I had a few days overlap until 14 March for the horrible carpet cleaning and actually needed it, far more to do than I realised. And I still missed 'animal debris/hair' on the radiator.  Got a very large close up photograph of it too! I did get my full deposit back.
