Delinquent status

Hi, not sure if I’m posting in the right place but I’m wondering if anyone can help. I have a small loan showing as delinquent on my credit file from 2015. I made no payments to said loan ( I was immature and didn’t deal with finances well back then ) my question is can a creditor just leave the status as delinquent for the rest of eternity or should there have been a default issued at some point?
TIA

They can, so you want it to be marked as defaulted.

Log a formal complain asking for the default to be backdated (typically to 3-6 months after your last payment was recorded). At that point the default should then drop off your credit file, as should happen automatically after 6 years. It might still be enforceable however, depending on when you last "acknowledged" the debt.

I had something similar happen recently where a telecom account was being reported as missed payment every month for 6 years+ ( it never went into default). I raised a dispute with transunion as it was an account that should have dropped off as it was past 6 years mark and within a week it was removed of my file.

To be clear, there is guidance (only) that a default should be registered after 3-6 contractually missed payments not 3-6 months. It would be worth a formal complaint I agree, but OP cannot demand this happens, it's just guidance.
