Scottish Power - end of fixed tariff and onto SVT

Hi All,
my fixed tariff with Scottish Power (SP) was ending on 31st April 2022. I was paying £75 per month for gas & electric. I do have solar panels to help with my usage.
Anyway, prior to the ending of the tariff SP offered me new fixed tariffs for 1 & 2 years and the price was an astronomical increase from my £75 to £380 which was ludicrous. I was in credit by about a month @ £75 when the tariff was due to end.
So I decided to revert to their SVT and I calculated it to be about £185 per month. SP came in at about £157 which to be fair was cheaper than I thought they would. So I've actually upped my DD to what I thought it would be to try and take into account the further price increase that is coming in October.
The point I'm trying to make is.... try and not panic (eyes popping out of your head) at what they might offer you with regards to a fixed tariff. Let your current one run out and assess it from there. I was pleasantly surprised  (if that's what you could call it) and had jumped to certain conclusions prior to the new monthly DD. But it wasn't as big a shock when it did come through. Yes, it has doubled (which I'd prefer it it didn't) but at least it hasn't quadrupled which it would have if I had been suckered into their new fixed term offer.

Reading various comments on here and elsewhere - SP seem to have form with this - both with their written offers and via the phone ! Wonder how many people have just rolled over onto these expensive fixed deals ??

Hi.I am in exactly the same position as you, with S P and my tariff finished same time as yours.Having looked at the difference between the fixed rates and the SVT,I realised that fixing was almost twice as much for the gas and electric units per kw.
So,having read the advice on the boards about it being better to just let it roll on to the SVT that is what I have done.Mine has gone from £100 per month to £150,which I actually changed ,mid April,in preparation, and also paid in an extra £100 so I had decent credit as well.
I have always fixed in the past but not this time.

This is good advice - there is a lot of panic being created around the situation as it stands - yes the increase IS steep, and yes it's important to ensure that we're prepared for what is coming, but it's also vital to actually do our own research on what is available to us and not just to be fearmongered into a knee-jerk reaction to fix out of a sense of panic!
