I have a student loan from 1996 and The Student Loan company is now Erudio student loans. I will soon be in a position where I will not be able to defer anymore.
Can they force me to pay even though this loan  is 26 years old?

If you can't defer because you earn enough to pay probably

Yes but keep in mind that for different periods, it may be written off anyway after say 30 years or whatever, check your plan details

As far as i am aware after w conversation with erudio today your loan should be written off 25 years after the first payment of the last loan so yours shouldnt be valid anymore unless you have further loans with other companies like honours ?

It's not that simple. Depending upon the loan type, the year you took it and your age when taken, whether you took a gap year etc.
The answers to those questions can change the write off dates which range between 15 and 40 years.

Plan 1 is not written off until age 65.
I can't remember ever choosing that username!

Is that the only old “mortgage-style” student loan you have?

Those old “mortgage-style” student loans are written off when the last year’s loan is 25 years old (assuming you were under 40 when you took them out). See schedule 12, paragraph 12 of The Education (Student Loans) Regulations 1998 for details. The write off only happens if you are not behind with payments, eg if you have been validly deferring them.
