Paying cheque into son's account

Options
My 18 year old is currently travelling broad on Gap year. He withdrew some money from savings and despite giving his bank details has been sent a cheque. He wants me to pay the cheque into his account so he can access his cash. Am I allowed to pay a cheque in his name into his account at the back or perhaps by post? Thanks

You'll struggle. Usually needs the debit card or a preprinted paying in slip.

It should be okay. Just get a paying in slip and get the bank account details from your son.

If you have the account details and the cheque matches the name on your son's account it should be fine.  Banks can get funny if the names differ - e.g. his name is Billy Bob Smith but the account shows Bob Smith or BB Smith.  If this is the case then if you have his birth certificate and all your ID showing you as his parent a bank may be more sympathetic.

And if you have a paying in slip you could simply drop the cheque and slip into a deposit box at the bank or drop it at the post office.

Depending on how much the cheque is for and which bank your son is with, it might be possible to pay it in via the app?

The son is travelling abroad on a gap year, so I assume doesn't physically have the cheque to be able to pay it in via an app.

But wouldn't the OP need his son's phone and log in to do this?

I quite often deposit cheques for my children (both now well into adulthood) at Nationwide, just by giving the account number and sort code, without any issue.

    .
No, the OP would just need to log into the app with the son's credentials. After installing the app, obviously, if they haven't got it already.

I know this is not strictly in line with the T&Cs but either the son trusts the parent or they have to find some other way of doing it.

Unfortunately exceeds the limit otherwise that would have been the perfect solution. Although he would only have a photo of the cheque as he is in south Africa.  Thank s so much though.

The name on the cheque exactly matches the name on his account and I have his account details. It's ages since I've been in a bank but I remember when depositing cheques in the past having to put my pin number in. I had forgotten about the deposit boxes you could simply post the cheque and paying in slip to. Thank you everyone, I'll nip down to Santander tomorrow.

I used to do that all the time for my daughter. She's with HSBC. All I needed was a paying in slip - and there was a space for me to sign as the person paying in the cheque - and the cheque. With cheques from America that she sometimes received it was a bit trickier as she had to endorse them on the back but ones from the UK were fine.

You might have more trouble withdrawing money from your son's bank account. But paying in, I have to say with HSBC there wasn't a problem and the cashiers got to know me as I used the same branch each time.

Things may have changed now, though. I'm not sure.

Could your son contact his bank and ask them to do as he asked in the first place as a cheque is very difficult for him to process right now?  I know we all get busy on our gap years (I did one years ago) but there was always time to contact people back home.
