British Gas Direct Debits

Hi, newbie here!
I’ve received an email from British Gas stating that they have updated their system to a new one and that my account information has been transferred over and my existing monthly DD payment which is taken on 21st of the month, will still be taken. 
However, as a result of their change, the new date for future DDs will be on 23rd of the month and the first payment will be taken two days late on 23rd May!
This means they’re taking two direct debit payments from my account within 48hrs!
They’ve even had the cheek to tell me to make sure that there’s enough money in my bank account to cover this.
Can they do this and has anyone else had this problem?

Can you post the original text of the email you received. The above seems to be a mix of the email you received and your interpretation of it.

What I read out of it is that instead of on the 21st your debit order will be taken on the 23rd, 2 days later than before. At the moment I do not see that they will do 2 direct debit orders this month.

I would ask the bank to reclaim one of the DD's if two payments go out. Paying two DD's to the same company within a short period could mean they could want the money to make payments for something and they cannot get their hands on any loans to pay the money. 

This is one theory or they could just take the payment two days later.
