Doors/glazing for new rear extension: 4m opening

Thanks Rdwill, I appreciate your thoughts. That overhang does sound very sensible.0

We also have an 1m overhang/canopy in our design (albeit a flat roof).
Our previous house had 3m sliding doors with no canopy and the glare/heat was a big issue.1 -
Lol, no nothing that sophisticated, the original extension / lean to looked like thisBikingBud said:
I notice the rear wall is slightly proud of the existing structure did you consider having the doors slide into a pocket?Rdwill said:As you're investigating

I walked around with a tape measure for ages trying to work out why my measurements didn't balance. The old extension, which we used as the end wall, as you can tell, was about 100mm not flush with the rest of the house. Hence the step that you can see now.0 -
Bifolds are no-longer fashionable, very slim sight lined patio's are the current trend. The people with sticky bifolds haven't maintained them, especially around the track area.womble12345 said:
Yours doors look really nice.Rdwill said:Yes, I suppose there are 3 "tracks" instead of 2.
I wanted 3 because
1. I wanted to be able to open to two thirds rather than just a half
2. I wanted the bars to be either side of my view rather than down the middle
I suppose the choice between the two would be your personal preference, what's your view like? where will you sit / stand when looking out of it? how wide will you want to open the doors?
I did not consider the cost or the weight of the doors when specifying 3 doors over 2.
I know money is tight for everyone, but don't skimp too much if you can help it, as you will be living with them for a long time.
Was there any particular reason you didnt got for bifold doors? Bifolds do seem very 'on-trend' at the moment and therefore my wife fancies some for our extension. I just know too many people with 'sticky' bi-folds that jam or require quite a struggle to open and it makes me think that a sliding door may be more suitable. I am interested in your thinking which may help my decision making.0 -
I've always thought there's too many large, moving parts in bifolds. Almost everyone I know has had issues.ytfcmad said:

Thanks for everyone's comments on this thread.
We have gone with 3250W x 2400H 2 panel sliders, with a 750mm window adjacent.0 -
I'm presuming the window is opening? Otherwise, why the window? You've taken your opening area down to 1.6m in a 4 metre opening. One of our 'sliders' doesn't slide at all. Not needed, the opening area is 2.5m in a 5m run regardless of whether one slides or both do, and we only need one fixed opening area, hence one slider.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

Yes, we ahave a fixed ansa moving pane. The window is partly tso we can have an opening window & partly because it is convenient for that part of the extension to have a wall/window cill!Doozergirl said:I'm presuming the window is opening? We installed a slightly smaller opening sliding door (3m) in a previous house & were happy with that, so we think it should work for us.1 -
Fine. As long as it work for you!Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.
