deposit paid and price agreed, now seller asking for more money

I recently agreed to buy a trailer from a private seller at the advertised asking price, bank transferred £50 deposit, they sent me conformation and all details via text.
They have since been offered more money for the trailer, so messaged me requesting me to pay another £750 or they would return my deposit so they can sell to someone offering more money
Be grateful for advice please, really want to buy the trailer
Many thanks

It is a private sale, not a lot more you can do, pay more or get your deposit back.

What proof do you have that there is a higher offer?

It could be a ploy to get you to pay more.

If you pay more he might come back with yet another higher offer.

The only advice we can give is to pay more or walk away.  It's worth what someone (including you) is prepared to pay for it.  If you're happy with the new price, buy it.  If you're not, or think they're trying it on, take the refund and walk away.  You can't force them to sell it to you.

... but there is clearly a contract in place so as well as the return of your deposit you can sue them for any losses you have incurred.

you actually have quite a lot of remedy when the other party breaks a contract - it's just whether you can be bothered to try and enforce them

Personally I'd refuse to pay any extra, remind him that he has a contract agreed to provide the trailer at the original price, and that if he refused to complete the contract I'd buy an equivalent elsewhere and look to him to repay any difference, including any additional costs I'd reasonably incurred such as travelling to view potential purchases.

You say you want the trailer but do you want to buy it for £1500, is it worth that much to you ?

I agree with previous comments, get your deposit and go elsewhere.

    Another £750?  That’s extortionate.

I would tell them to **** off and get your money back.

As far as I am aware if it were a business the contract should be binding but I dont know anything about contracts between private individuals.  CAB will know if you decided to take it further.
