My profile says I've started 3 discussions (this is actually my 3rd discussion) but I've only started 2. Is that normal or should I flag up with MSE tech team?

Well apparently I've made 21.  Which is interesting because I only remember making three.

    I wouldn't worry about it.
You'll be hard pushed to find any web forum that is 100% accurate in the number of posts/threads/likes you made.

It should be very easy to do that ... after all the information is stored in a database. If the info can't be accurately retrieved then either (a) the data hasn't been saved, or (b) it hasn't been saved correctly, or (c) the queries to retrieve the info haven't been properly constructed. All of those can be fixed if the forum/database owner has the will to do so.

I know they *can* be fixed, but sometimes if posts are deleted the count doesn't always go down by one, or a thread you've contributed heavily to has been moved to a private forum (that only forum admin can see for example) but the overall tally is everything you've ever done in any forum.  This may be design, it may be by accident.

Anyway a lot of popular forum "off the shelf" software can be modded.  Which always generates occasionally interesting situations.  The bigger a forum gets (with or without mods/plugins) the more likely something is going to go wrong somewhere with the counts.

Reporting a post actually creates a hidden thread in the background that only the Forum Team can see, so that is likely to account for many of the discrepancies in threads/discussions counts.

I’m trying to work out the business case for spending a lot of time so that the statistics displayed are more accurate. :)

No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

One could argue whether there's a business case to even show the statistics at all. ;)

Although seeing links to discussions a user has started can be useful, especially where a discussion has useful info to point another user towards. :)

I says 5 now but only lists 3, including this one.

It also says you have made 12 replies but it only lists 2.

Perhaps Putin's trolls are targeting you with misinformation.
A man walked into a car showroom.
He said to the salesman, “My wife would like to talk to you about the Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
Salesman said, “We haven't got a Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
The man replied, “You have now mate".
