have just seen that the famous Inter-Rail pass is on sale at half
price: but you can only buy it until 10 May! (Once you have bought it
you can use it at any time within the next 11 months.) The pass offers
unlimited train travel throughout Europe for an entire month, and costs
£209 for anyone aged under 27; £251 for someone aged over 60
and £278 for other adults. And this is the sight that sells the pass:https://www.interrail.eu/en/50th-anniversary/next-stop-big-adventure-saleNote also that Germany is introducing a monthly travel pass that costs 9 Euro per month, but it will only be available for June, July and August. This pass is valid on local and regional transport throughout Germany, but not on the fastest inter-city trains.

Extended for one more day - https://www.myinterrail.co.uk/interrail-pass-sale
Very tempting. Haven't interrailed since 1987 😱
How hard is it to now *use* it?
I haven't dug through https://www.myinterrail.co.uk/plan-your-trip, but I did see some tickets have extra costs (high speed trains etc).
Very very tempted!Plan for tomorrow, enjoy today!0 -

Using it on Regional and Local trains would be very easy. Most inter-city and above trains require reservations and supplements, so there could be significant extra costs, but making reservations and paying supplements is easy so long as you can afford to do so.
Of course the big problem is that even hostels are now expensive: in a high-cost country like Germany you should budget at least £30 per night even if you are happy to sleep in a dormitory! And if you are exploring a low-cost country such as Poland (where that budget would get you a very comfortable hotel) you might just as well buy train tickets one at a time, since the trains are so cheap that you would never spend enough on tickets to justify the cost of the pass.

I'm thinking of doing interail, but I haven't decided what to visit yet, can you help me?0

From my experience many years ago I would say expensive countries is where the value in interrail lies. Not much point is using up time on a pass like that in countries where you can travel around cheaply. One problem with interrail is most people go from city to city only looking at the countryside through the window....... For great value a cheap return flight to Germany and a 9 Euro train pass for one months travel sounds like a great deal. You might only use 2 weeks of the pass and it would not matter as you will take this experience to the next time when perhaps you have a full interail pass....... But of course if you dont fancy Germany or if the pass is not what it seems then that wont be a good idea.

Years ago I got a cheap interrail-like holiday by going to the German railway office in London and booking a pair of singles from Athens to Germany and Germany to London plus a six-day German railcard good for all fast or slow trains. Explored Athens Zagreb Munich Cologne Heidelberg Salzburg etc. Brilliant value. There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker1
